Winstanley, Paul
Paul Winstanley paints quiet public spaces.
In this painting, you are standing, looking over the back of chairs arranged in rows, dictating how you should sit, facing a television which is currently switched off and with your back to the door. The sun shining high on the back wall and the tidy, organised layout of the room suggest the day might be new. Nothing is offered for your eyes to enjoy; the walls are devoid of any creative touch; there are no pictures, patterns, notices or signs.
But within this emptiness, standing quietly and undisturbed, outside of time, things are familiar. You are waiting for something or someone. You are offered a moment to think. For a little while there will be no distraction. Nothing will be imposed. Your thoughts are your own.
