Untitled (rawl plugs)

2007
Collis, Susan
Susan Collis' rawl plugs may appear to have been left behind after the removal of an artwork from an exhibition. Closer inspection, however, reveals that these are not just standard plastic plugs, but finely crafted objects from brown goldstone and onyx, their seeming ordinariness belying their true value. Susan Collis also creates objects that appear marked, stained or worn. Just as her rawl plugs and screws deceive the viewer, her ladders, brooms, drop-sheets and smocks turn out to be inlaid with precious opals and diamonds or embroidered with intricate stitching to mimic the splatters and splashes of paint that might be found in an artist's studio. According to the artist the 'dual ideas of unbelievable perfection and mess' combine with her interest in material and process to 'make a kind of poetic language'. Rachel Arndt
