Timothy Behrens was one of the founding members of the School of London, a group of artists who regularly visited a private drinking club in Soho, called The Colony Room. Also known as The Colony Room School, the group was formed by Bohemian artists preoccupied with figurative painting and included Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Frank Auerbach and Michael Andrews.

Behrens was interested in depicting ordinary objects and scenes from everyday life, using the interplays of perspective and colour. His early paintings usually have photographic structure due tothe episodic, detailed nature of their themes.
