Drawing for Terrazzo Wall, Royal Festival Hall

1988
McLean, Bruce
These drawings, showing the view from the Southbank Centre across the river to Waterloo Bridge, are studies for the mosaic, 'Terrazzo Wall' in the Royal Festival Hall. McLean uses a limited but vibrant palette of black, green, purple and red for this scene, which is framed on one side by the green of the trees which line the Southbank walkway, and on the other by the face of an unknown figure looking out over the scene. McLean's practice includes sculpture, performance, ceramics, paintings and print-making. 'Drawing for Terrazzo Wall' is typical of the bold, expressive drawing style found in his works in paint and on paper. Rather than depicting an exact view from the Southbank, McLean creates the mood and rhythm of the scene through his use of line and colour. Sarah Campbell
