Clough, Prunella
Combining both figuration and abstraction, Prunella Clough's subjects come from the urban landscape. Early on in her career she made sketches in factories and at Lowestoft harbour, with its busy maritime life. Her later works demonstrate an equally meticulous observation of everyday objects, frequently transforming them and leaving only traces and hints of their former selves.
Clough has commented: 'I am essentially an 'eye' person, totally affected by visual facts' and 'I think that having a tonal basis for the work is as much to do with the English wind and weather as anything else. In other words, geography and climate, I work from subject matter, things perceived, and the things that I see tend to be somewhat murky.'
